Before arriving at here, he spent 5 years working as a retail assistant, including the crazy 18 months during lockdown! Connor said

Being a Building Control Apprentice has improved my confidence massively. Initially, applying for this role was quite daunting as I had very little experience in the industry. However, I soon came to realise that I had transferable skills to help me adapt and learn in a short space of time.

We asked caught up with Connor and asked him about his apprenticeship so far…

Why is Building Control a great career choice?

Building Control allows me to be part of the changes going on in my local area. It gives me opportunities to interact with a diverse range of people as well as help develop my own personal skills. My colleagues are very supportive and enthusiastic, making the role more enjoyable.

What do you most enjoy about your current role?

I enjoy the dynamic and challenging day-to-day environment and training opportunities we are provided with. I am responsible for making sure all buildings are built to the highest quality and making sure each stage of the building process adheres to building regulations.

How do you see your career progressing?

Short term, I am looking forward to being given more responsibility and diversifying my training. Long term, I am looking to be a fully qualified surveyor, carrying out site inspections in a specified area, and mentoring new trainees.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about joining the apprenticeship programme?

Join the apprenticeship programme! An apprenticeship is a great opportunity to jump into a career as everything you’ll be taught can be used in practice straight away. If you can be responsible and organised and set clear goals, you’ll succeed at the highest level.

The next generation

Our apprenticeship programme is established to address the skills shortage in building surveying, it allows Build Insight to train and address the future skills needed for the workforce. Plus, it helps to take steps to cover the level of construction due to take place over the coming decades.
